General Information

Water covers about 10% of the surface area of Quebec. The province has 3% of the world's renewable freshwater and 40% of this is located in the St. Lawrence River watershed.

The ministère du Développement durable, de l'Environnement et des Parcs is responsible for Quebec's water resources through two agencies:

  • the Centre d'expertise hydrique du Québec (CEHQ) agency is responsible for regulating the water regime. It operates water level and flow measurement stations on the main waterways and is responsible for the operation and management of 780 public dams.
  • the Centre d'expertise en analyse environnementale du Québec is responsible for the environmental protection and conservation of  the province's resources.
